holcim uk paves the way to valgard at paultons park new viking realm
Leading supplier of sustainable building materials, Holcim UK, has provided coloured asphalt to support the launch of a new £12 million Viking-themed land at Paultons Park in Hampshire.
Already one of the UK’s leading family theme parks with more than one million visitors each year and home to Peppa Pig World, the park has expanded to include Valgard – Realm of the Vikings, featuring the park’s first inverting rollercoaster, Drakon, as well as new rides, a themed restaurant and play areas.
Working in collaboration with contractor Funnell and Howard, Holcim supplied 187 tonnes of its Supercolour Ultra Buff asphalt, along with 220 tonnes of 20mm base course, for the major new attraction.
The park required a high-performance pedestrian surface that could withstand heavy footfall while aligning with the muted tones of the Viking setting - delivered within a tightly coordinated construction programme alongside multiple trades.
Holcim’s Supercolour Ultra Buff SMA 10mm solution was selected for its long-lasting finish and ability to deliver a high quality, consistent appearance, offering a typical lifespan of 15–20 years, significantly outperforming painted alternatives which often require replacement within one to three years. Using a clear binder combined with coloured pigment, the material also offers significant design flexibility, allowing schemes to align closely with their surrounding environment.
Materials were delivered from Holcim’s Bristol plant in 20-tonne batches with two deliveries per day across a five-day installation window (10 deliveries total) in the lead-up to the park’s mid-May opening.
Carefully timed deliveries ensured the product remained at an optimum temperature for hand-laying, enabling the team to work efficiently within a tight programme while coordinating with other work on site.
Harry Folwell, Supercolour Sales Associate at Holcim UK, said: “The successful delivery of our material, combined with the vibrancy of the colour, played a significant role in enhancing the overall impact of this project, allowing this section of the park to stand out prominently. The Supercolour Buff material was installed to an exceptionally high standard by the contractor, and its finish contributed to a seamless integration with the surrounding pathways.
“The use of our coloured asphalt solution offers a durable, long-term advantage over painted surfaces, eliminating concerns around fading or peeling—an essential consideration for a project of this scale.”
Mark Taylor, General Manager Technical Services, at Paultons Park, said: “Valgard - Realm of the Vikings is an ambitious addition to Paultons Park, and achieving the right look and feel was paramount. Working with Funnell and Howard and Holcim UK allowed us to secure a surfacing solution that is both beautiful and incredibly functional.
“The buff tones of the Supercolour asphalt perfectly reflect the Viking village theme, providing a premium finish for our guests to enjoy as they explore Valgard. We are delighted with the result, which was delivered through excellent communication and a commitment to meeting our opening deadline.”
