Ewell Castle's New Clay Tennis Courts

Sports specialist Holcim was privileged to support Ewell Castle School with the construction of 3 artifical clay courts in Epsom.
Ewell Castle School is a 3–18 mixed, private day school and sixth form in Ewell, Epsom, Surrey, England.
Ewell Castle Tennis Academy is a school tennis academy for pupils at Ewell Castle School Prep (Yrs 5 & 6 only) and Senior School (Years 7 to 13). It provides performance tennis with a tailored, independent school education.
The Ewell Castle School Tennis Academy offers a scholarship scheme for our Prep and Senior School that includes elite level tennis and coaching with an independent school tailored curriculum. The Tennis Academy Coaching Programme is fully funded by Ewell Castle School and scholars are accepted on to the programme following a trial with one of the coaches.
With over 20 years of sports court construction experience we were delighted to be the chosen contractor of choice to construct these 3 fantastic courts.
Solution
The project transformed a previously unused area of brownfield land into a high-quality sporting asset designed for performance, durability, and accessibility.
The courts were constructed on an undeveloped section of the school grounds, requiring Holcim to carry out extensive groundwork and environmental management. As part of our commitment to sustainable construction, the existing sub-base material on site was recycled and reused. This not only reduced waste and haulage but also helped build up the court levels to support attenuation and effective drainage.
The courts were developed using a layered approach that included Recycled sub-base, Drainage system and attenuation features, Foundation stone and kerbs, Macadam base layer and a bold, high-performance artificial clay surface in red, using Smashcourt GRANUCOL® DURA G infill.
GRANUCOL® DURA is a premium infill product made from quartz sand particles with rounded edges and a durable colour coating. It offers outstanding UV stability, abrasion resistance, and low maintenance requirements, while delivering excellent ball bounce and athletic biomechanical properties for optimal play.
Relevant Products & Services
To complete the facility, Holcim installed a 3-metre-high perimeter fence with a secure, coded access gate and floodlighting to extend playing hours and improve security.
Surrounding pathways and soft landscaping were also added, ensuring the courts are fully accessible and integrated into the wider school environment. The final result is a vibrant, durable, and inclusive sports facility that will benefit students for years to come
