SOLUTION USED
THE BRIEF
High profile, short term events – Major League Baseball (MLB) and Marvel Monster Jam, at the London Stadium required aggregate haulage and waste removal with complex logistics and sustainable end of life for the products used. With events both before and after, the delivery and removal of the products had to be timed perfectly.
Short term events like these only require products for a few days. Providing an alternative use for them after the event concludes while avoiding landfill ensures that the materials are brought into the circular economy with a second life as a Holcim product or as infill at another site.

Solution
With tight access windows and short removal times, these projects were carried out under significant time pressure by our haulage and Waste Removal Services teams.
In June 2024, over 5,000 tonnes of aggregates were delivered to the London Stadium to construct the temporary baseball diamond and pitcher’s mound for the MLB matchup between the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies. After the weekend-long event all 5,000 tonnes were removed and transported to Holcim UK asphalt plants in Purfleet and Greenwich, where they were processed and reintegrated into the supply chain. We delivered a clear circular construction process.
In July 2024, Marvel Monster Jam required the installation of various ramps which would need to bear the weight and speed of 12,000-pound monster trucks. Holcim UK developed a specialist clay and 0-6mm soil blend, tailored for the monster truck use – ideal for traction, ramping and compaction, supplying 4,800 tonnes of this specialist blend to the event.

The material was imported over the two days prior to the event and our Waste Removal Services team took all the materials away immediately after the show, carefully restoring the venue for subsequent use the following day. Rather than treating the used soil as waste, it was delivered to a nearby RSPB habitat in Rainham, supporting environmental restoration.
Relevant Products & Services
Waste Removals ensured zero material from either event went to landfill and highlighted a proactive approach to resource reuse in support of the circular economy and biodiversity.
