New 200 space car park developed for Torbay Hospital
The Background
The efficient running of the trust depends heavily on the hospital having adequate facilities. As the Trust identified, crucial to maintaining a high level of efficiency is for staff to be provided with quicker, easier, safer and less stressful parking arrangements, given the reactive nature of their job. In September 2016, the board announced plans to improve all car parking across its site for both staff and the public. The plan included the construction of a number of purpose built car parks, including a new 200 space car park at Cadewell Lane, spanning 2000ft² that would operate 24 hours a day, via a pay-on-exit barrier system.
The Brief
With more than 26 years of civil engineering and surfacing experience in the local area, Devon-based contractor, JTT Contracting Ltd, was successful in securing the contract to construct and lay the new car park and access road. An essential component for the successful delivery of the complex project was finding the right materials supplier to work with to produce the right, sustainable solution for the car park. The ability to deliver both technical advice and an innovative solution was key.
As a non-quarry backed contractor, JTT Contracting has benefitted from the ability to focus entirely on its experienced management and labour force, and investment in specialist equipment. The company prides itself on the longstanding relationships it has with key materials suppliers.
Aggregate Industries has operated an extensive operation of supplying building and construction materials in the South West for decades and as such was the go-to choice for JTT Contracting.
The Solution
Aggregate Industries’ Asphalt Specification Manager Keith Harvey recommended SuperParking, a bespoke car parking solution which has been designed and engineered to provide a tough, hard wearing, low maintenance asphalt surface, that would overcome the issues associated with static loading. Aggregate Industries’ Andy Spencer and Keith Harvey subsequently worked closely together to ensure JTT Contracting was given all the appropriate information allowing them to complete a successful project.
Proven to outperform both traditional and current surfacing options, the 6mm asphalt is four times more resistant to the scuffing action of car wheels, 35 per cent more durable, and five times more resistant to deformation.
All of the prep work was completed in the week prior to the surface installation, which included material from Aggregate Industries’ Stoneycombe Quarry, in Newton Abbot, for the sub-base, 200 tonnes of 20mm dense binder and the gabion baskets that surround the car park.
Given that this was the first project of its kind in the UK, Aggregate Industries’ technical team was on-hand on the day of the surface installation to check the spread rate and how the material was going down. In total 140 tonnes of SuperParking was laid.
Sarah, from JTT Contracting, comments: “This was the first time the team had worked with SuperParking and, as advised, we treated it as any normal asphalt application and it went down superbly and performed exceptionally well! Torbay Hospital has been really pleased with the outcome and we’ve also recently received a referral letter from the NHS. We hope local authorities can look to this project as a case study in practice that showcases an asphalt solution that addresses real problems faced by car park owners, thus saving them a substantial amount in refurbishment costs every year!”
