Laying foundations for the future: Krish Patel’s story
From the age of 16, Krish Patel has shown incredible drive. He went straight into work and didn’t want to waste a second. Fast-forward just 15 years and Krish is managing the entire operational development of Holcim’s new Tilbury site – and has no plans to slow down.
High hopes from day one
Krish is plant manager at Holcim UK’s newest site, Tilbury, located on the River Thames in Essex. At just 31 years old, this achievement is no mean feat, with Krish’s track record of hitting major milestones early on in his life laying the foundations for a path to success.
At 16, Krish started as an apprentice in a company manufacturing specialised electrical components and gained valuable skills working across departments. He then transitioned to an apprenticeship in minerals manufacturing at Holcim UK and quickly progressed into a management role at Heidelberg Materials UK.
Krish said: “When I was 20, I became plant manager at Heidelberg Materials UK and led a £7.2 million asphalt plant rebuild. I then went on to manage one of Europe’s largest grinding station before moving to oversee the operational preparedness of the new plant at Tilbury.
“This is the biggest and most complex challenge I’ve faced in my work career and is a project I’m really proud to be a part of.”
Hitting great heights early on in his life didn’t mean it was completely smooth sailing for Krish. He’s had to learn how to collaborate with people, manage his personal struggles and make sure he’s present for his two young children.
Building strong teams
Krish’s father passed away when he was just 15, which was a major factor behind his early venture into work.
“When I lost my father, I just threw myself into work and spent my free time supporting my mum,” Krish said.
“He was only 40 when he passed away, so it’s always been at the back of my mind as I’ve grown older. Even though I’ve achieved so much, I’m very aware that you never know what’s around the corner, and it’s one of the reasons why I’m really positive about what I do at Holcim.
“I’d like to say I’m a coordinator rather than a technical expert. I build my team with experts and then build confidence with stakeholders by showcasing what my team can do. They’re the skilled professionals and I let them take centre stage.”
Krish reports directly to the company’s board and has full operational governance responsibility. He ensures everything runs like clockwork and, with Tilbury’s phase one operations due to commence imminently, he’s no stranger to pressure.
“I have plenty of experience in turning around underperforming sites, but this isn’t the case at Tilbury,” Krish said.
“Here, I’m building the entire operation and a young, talented team from scratch. That means embedding a healthy culture and getting a real understanding of what good people management looks like.
“I’m committed to growing my leadership development through Ivey Business School’s emerging leaders programme, and this has also helped me expand my strategic network. I’ve always said managing people is so much more complex than managing machines, and I’m really keen to make sure employees at Tilbury are proud of what they do and the place they work.”
At the heart of Krish’s leadership style is a dedication to empowering those around him and ensuring employees enjoy their life outside of work too. Once tasks are completed, Krish encourages his team to go home; he has built a culture of presence and commitment when needed.
Krish said: “I trust my team and they trust me – that’s what makes Tilbury a great place to work. I also know how important looking after your mental wellbeing is. This industry is predominantly male dominated and, typically, men struggle to open up. That’s why I’m really proud to champion mental wellbeing in the workplace.”
Committed to showing up
Although it’s full steam ahead in his work life, Krish is committed to spending quality family time with his wife and children.
He said: “Every night, my family and I eat dinner together at the dining table at 6pm, and I’m there to pick up and drop off my kids because I know how valuable that time with them is.
“I’ve always been into my cooking and my wife and I share that responsibility at home – even if she isn’t a fan of the amount of pans I use! When we get downtime, it’s all about family and I love getting the barbecue out — when the weather allows – and playing cricket with friends.”
After all the hard work and preparation, Krish is ready for Tilbury to start creating revenue and is proud that he has established firm foundations for his team to continuing growing.
